YouTube Shorts Blocker

Chromium extension (Manifest V3) that hides YouTube Shorts and opens Shorts links in the normal video player.

  • youtube.com/shorts/<id> → youtube.com/watch?v=<id> (also m.youtube.com)
  • youtube.com/shorts (the Shorts feed) → YouTube home page
  • Hides Shorts shelves, Shorts tiles in feeds/search/related videos, the "Shorts" sidebar entry, and the "Shorts" tab on channel pages

Install

  1. Open chrome://extensions
  2. Turn on Developer mode (top right)
  3. Click Load unpacked and pick this folder

After editing any file, click the reload icon on the extension's card.

Files

File What it does
rules.json Redirects Shorts URLs before the page loads (declarativeNetRequest)
content.js Catches in-page navigation to Shorts (YouTube changes the URL without reloading)
content.css Hides Shorts elements. If Shorts start showing up again after a YouTube update, fix the selectors here.

Known limits

  • The channel "Shorts" tab is matched by its English label. If YouTube is set to another language the tab stays visible, but the Shorts inside it are still hidden.
  • Chromium creates a _metadata/ folder in here when it loads the extension; that's normal.
